Apple Pie French Toast – A Great Holiday Breakfast Idea!

Looking at the calendar today I could hardly believe my eyes! Thanksgiving is right around the corner! And as if to put a point on it, the weather has turned SO cold here! All this cold weather and thinking of the upcoming holidays gets me thinking of one thing….lots of good food on the way! 🙂 At my house, the holidays are FIRST about family & friends, with some acts of charity thrown in, but after that it’s all about the FOOD. That’s why in addition to our traditional dishes, I’m always on the look out for some new delicious ones to try out.

That’s why I was so excited when I spied this recipe for Apple Pie French Toast in the new book, “12 Days of Christmas with Six Sisters’ Stuff.” Camille, Kristen, Elyse, Stephanie, Lauren, and Kendra have come up with a book chock full of great dishes, gift basket ideas, and decorating projects that I think will have you as excited about the upcoming holidays as I am! 🙂

Apple Pie French Toast

adapted from “12 Days of Christmas With Six Sisters’ Stuff

Ingredients

  • 18 slices of bread
  • 1 (21oz) can apple pie filling
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup

Place six slices of bread in a greased baking dish.

Scoop half of the contents of the can of apple pie filling on top of the layer of bread, spreading as evenly as possible across the pieces. Add another layer of bread to the dish, and then spread the rest of the apple pie filling on that layer. Cover with a final layer of bread.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour evenly onto the bread, then cover your dish with plastic wrap or tin foil and refrigerate overnight.

The next morning, remove the dish from the refrigerator and uncover at least a half an hour before baking. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cubed butter by cutting together with a pastry cutter. You want the texture to resemble coarse crumbs.

Stir in the chopped pecans and the corn syrup. Sprinkle the mixture on top of the bread, and bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes.

You’ll know it’s done when a knife inserted in the center of the dish comes out clean.

I can’t wait to make this for my family on Thanksgiving morning! I know they are going to love it!

Ingredients
  

  • 18 slices Bread
  • 21 oz Apple pie filling
  • 8 Eggs
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 2 tsp Vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup Brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup Butter cubed
  • 1 cup Pecans chopped
  • 2 Tbsp Corn syrup

Instructions
 

  • Place 6 pieces of bread in a greased baking dish.
  • Spread one half of the pie filling on top of the bread.
  • Add another 6 layer of bread on top.
  • Spread the remaining pie filling on top.
  • Cover with the remaining slices of bread.
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl.
  • Pour egg mixture over the bread.
  • Cover the dish and refrigerate overnight.
  • Remove dish from fridge and uncover.
  • In a small bowl, cut cubed butter into brown sugar until it becomes coarse in texture.
  • Stir in pecans and corn syrup.
  • Crumble this mixture over the bread and bake for 40-45 minutes.
