This Simple DIY Is The Most Affordable Facial You’ll Ever Get

An exfoliating microdermabrasion treatment without the price tag, AND from the comfort of your own home? You better believe it!

A while ago, I was working on some sort of project that required a lot of sticky adhesives, and of course it got ALL over my hands. I went to the kitchen sink to wash them and noticed a bowl of my kitchen “miracle cleaner” I had left there after my latest kitchen cleaning session.

Curious to see if it might help get the glue off my fingers, I decided to scoop up a bit of the baking soda mixture and scrub my hands with it. And to my delight, not only did it take the glue right off, but afterward my hands felt so soft and smooth!

As I was admiring the exfoliating effect of the baking soda mixture, I started to wonder if it had any merit as a facial exfoliant—a baking soda microdermabrasion scrub, if you will. After all, I’ve always felt that baking soda had more of a polishing effect than a scouring effect as a cleaner, which is what you want in a good exfoliant.

So I did a little research, and it turned out that I was onto something with my idea of using baking soda as as exfoliant! Apparently there are plenty of estheticians use baking soda in their upscale salon treatments, both because it’s natural and gentler than a lot of manufactured scrubs. Many people have also used it to help clear up acne too.

These discoveries inspired me to try my hand at making a baking soda microdermabrasion scrub, which I now once a week to remove dead skin cells and brighten up my complexion! In addition to baking soda, my scrub also features nourishing rosehip oil for added moisture and lavender and geranium essential oils for their skin-soothing properties.

If you’re looking for a simple exfoliating treatment you can make and use at home, I definitely recommend giving this one a try!

How To Make A Baking Soda Microdermabrasion Scrub

*Note: Baking soda is fine for most skin types, but if you have especially sensitive skin, I would recommend using a gentler alternative like blended oats instead of baking soda. And making blended oats is easy—just grind a handful of oats into a fine powder using your blender or coffee grinder!

Add the baking soda and a small amount of rosehip oil to a small bowl.

Mix the baking soda and oil together to form a loose or wet paste. (If your mixture looks a little thick, add a bit more oil until you achieve the desired texture.)

Finally, add the essential oils and stir again.

This recipe makes enough for one treatment. The baking soda will dissolve into the oil over time if you attempt to store this mixture, so mix up a fresh batch for each use.

How To Use It

Before using this scrub, use your favorite cleanser or makeup remover to cleanse your skin. (It’s always a good idea to begin any sort of skin treatment with a clean face!)

Scoop up some of the scrub mixture with your fingers, then gently rub in into your skin in small circular motions. Continue rubbing it in for a few minutes, taking care to avoid your eyes as you do so.

Rinse your face thoroughly with clean water, then bask in the glow of your softer, fresher looking skin! Use this treatment once a week to start, adjusting your frequency as needed according to your skin type.

So there you have it, yet another amazing use for the humble box of baking soda in your kitchen cupboard. Oh baking soda, is there anything you can’t do? 😉
