From cleaning around the house to tackling pressing skin problems, there are so many useful ways to incorporate essential oils into your daily routines. Personally, one way I’ve been using oils recently is in caring for my aging hair!
While my blonde strands have been streaked with white and gray for some time now, it wasn’t until more recently that I asked myself, “I wonder which essential oils could help me restore strength and moisture to my hair?” And luckily for me, my research on the topic yielded plenty of possibilities!
Whether you’re looking to balance the oil production of a dry or oily scalp, grow stronger strands, or repair locks that have suffered years of damage from heat and chemicals, essential oils are one of the few natural ingredients that can help you address your aging hair concerns.
And there are so many great options! No matter your hair or scalp type, there’s an essential oil out there that can help you maintain strong and healthy hair. Today we’ll explore how to choose an essential oil for your specific hair type, and I’ll share three different methods for utilizing essential oils based on your hair’s unique needs.
Choosing The Best Essential Oil For Your Aging Hair
Choosing the right essential oil for your aging hair is as simple as identifying your biggest concern or pain point. Here are some of the most common concerns people have with their aging hair, along with the essential oil that can best help solve it:
For Sluggish Hair Growth: Peppermint Oil
For many of us more “mature” folks, our hair simply doesn’t grow like it used to! To help strengthen your hair and promote growth, peppermint oil can provide a much-needed boost to your hair and scalp.
Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all used peppermint oil for its health and beauty benefits, and those benefits are just as useful to us today! In fact, one study of peppermint oil found that those who applied it topically to their hair showed increases in the number of follicles, follicle depth, and overall hair growth!
For Dandruff & Scalp Buildup: Tea Tree Oil
Say goodbye to flakes and white shoulders! Tea tree oil can be a powerful tool for treating scalp conditions like dandruff and reducing the buildup of dead skin cells on the scalp that can contribute to hair loss.
Tea tree oil can also help eliminate other types of scalp buildup that can cause problems, like hair product residue and excess sebum.
For Dry Or Damaged Hair: Geranium Oil
Geranium oil is the perfect ally for fighting dry hair and keeping your locks strong and healthy. It can help balance the oil production in your scalp and provide the potent hydration dry hair needs without leaving it a greasy mess.
Geranium is equally useful for damaged hair, which is often sapped of moisture due to repeated exposure to heat or chemicals. It helps to nourish and strengthen the strands while smoothing frizziness and split ends.
For Oily Hair: Lemon Oil
For those with oily hair, washing it too frequently can backfire, causing your scalp to produce even more oil. You may need to “retrain” your hair and scalp by shampooing less often, but the adjustment period can leave you struggling with greasy locks.
Lemon essential oil offers a simple solution, helping to cut through grease and excess oil while also helping to balance your scalp’s oil production.
For Dry Or Itchy Scalp: Lavender Oil
Lavender essential oil may be famous for its ability to soothe irritated skin, but it can be just as soothing for itchy scalps! Its natural anti-inflammatory properties help relieve irritation and itchiness while also promoting healing and providing additional moisture.
3 Ways To Apply Essential Oils To Your Hair & Scalp
Once you’ve determined which essential oil will help you meet your hair goals, next you’ll need to decided how to use it! There are a few different ways to get the benefits you’re looking for, and a lot of it will depend on your hair type and personal preferences.
Here are three easy methods you can choose from:
Method #1: Quick Treatment
Best for normal hair and busy schedules.
For a quick and easy essential oil treatment, simply add about 3 drops of your oil of choice to your shampoo or conditioner while washing your hair. If you’re addressing your scalp, add the oil to your shampoo and give your head a good scrub with your fingertips. If you’re addressing the shaft or ends of your hair, add the oil to your conditioner and apply as usual.
Either way, be sure to let it sit for about five minutes before rinsing it out for best results.
Method #2: Deep Treatment
Best for thick, coarse, or extra-dry hair.
For a deep treatment, prepare a hair mask by combining 1/4 cup of fractionated coconut oil, 1/4 cup of witch hazel, 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, and 10 drops of essential oils. (Feel free to mix and match oils for a total of 10 drops.)
Apply the mask to dry hair and massage it into your scalp. Let sit for a few hours under a shower cap (or even overnight), then wash it out and style as usual.
Method #3: Hair Serum
Best for fine, thin, or oily hair.
Make a nourishing hair serum by mixing 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil with about 3 drops of essential oil. Apply the oil mixture very lightly to wet hair, focusing on the shaft and ends while avoiding the scalp and roots. This light serum will help tame pesky flyaways and keep your hair hydrated without making it overly greasy.
