“Crafting It Forward” In Honor Of . . . Random Acts Of Kindness Week

For some reason the other day I got to thinking about all the wonderful teachers my 4 kidlets have had throughout the years, and to be honest, I started getting a little choked up! With the exception of a few “challenges” along the way, my kids have been taught by a LOT of amazing, dedicated teachers!

One teacher in particular had the fortune (or misfortune, depending on the day…and the kid!) to be the 3rd grade teacher of all four of my children! Mr. MaWhinney has taught 3rd grade in our town for a LONG time and he truly is the epitome of “teacher” in my book. He’s funny, kind, generous, understanding, wise, inventive, caring, inspiring, and downright happy! As a matter of fact, he is a HUGE fan of “The Happiest Place On Earth” – Disneyland! Every spring he and the other 3rd grade teachers present a Disney-themed program that is one of the highlights of the school year! My kids still reminisce about it! ๐Ÿ™‚

When I was given the opportunity to participate in Michael’s Craft It Forward project in honor of Random Acts of Kindness Week…”Mr. M” (as everyone loves to call him!) was immediately who came to mind. The kindness and service he has given my children over the years is more than worthy of a RAOK.

So I took my gift card to Michaels and looked for a “craft project” that not only would be fun to share as a post, but would also be a help to Mr. M in his classroom.

Well, it must have been meant to be, because it just so happened that on the day I went to my local Michaels store all the Crayola products were 50% off, as were many of the craft organization products!

I decided to create a small craft supplies cubby that he could keep in a corner of his classroom and fill it with goodies! I have no doubt that Mr. M will come up with ingenious ways for the kids to use them.

Since I was a bit “under the gun” to get this project done by the deadline, I kept this very simple! But that’s the thing I really like about Michaels! They have oodles of ideas and projects from the simple to the sublime, and everything in between.

I found this roughly 14 inch square cube with dividers that I thought would be nice for storing and dividing supplies.

Then I grabbed a couple of packs of these great self-adhesive cardstock strips in bright colors and went to town!

I cut the strips into (6) two-inch squares using my rotary cutter, and then proceeded to stick them onto the cube in a random mosaic-type pattern. No measuring involved in the spacing (I used the very precise “eyeballing it” method), but I would suggest for the best spacing outcome that you do the corners first and then the edges, and work your way in. I wasn’t aiming for “perfection” because, let’s face it, 3rd graders aren’t “perfect”. ๐Ÿ™‚

And that is it! Those adhesive cardstock strips made this project a SNAP and saved me SO much time! I love those things. I’m definitely going to have to think of some more stuff I can do with them. ๐Ÿ™‚

After all the sticking was done I loaded all the goodies into the cubby and it’s all ready to deliver to the school today!  I promise to take a photo and update this post! I want everyone to see the wonderful Mr. M!

Update: The boys and I delivered the craft cubby to Mr. M this afternoon! It was so great to see him and he was so excited, not only for the gift, but to see the boys “all grown up”!  Thanks Mr. M…for being such a great role model for my boys! ๐Ÿ™‚
