DIY Halloween Costumes For Adults & Kids You Can Make In A Jiffy!

Some inspiration to make your Halloween costume decisions a little less stressful this year!

As much as I love Halloween…Halloween costumes stress me out! Now that my kids are older and I don’t have to come up with 4 costumes each year, most of that stress has gone away, but occasionally I have to come up with a costume for myself and I’m back to being a stress case. Last year I decided to go to a Halloween store to try and find a costume which turned out to be a joke. Apparently costume makers think all women want to be a sexy version of a cop, nurse, soldier, or just about anything else you could think of. Believe it or not, I actually saw a “sexy nun” costume! OY!

I knew there had to be a better way. Britta, Kaitlyn, and I decided to come up with some costume ideas we could make ourselves that were cheap, easy, and fun! And when we say “cheap” we are talking money. 🙂

We actually had a blast coming up with them and then talking each other into wearing them. lol. I’m not sure how I managed to get out of modeling duty….must have been my lucky day! 🙂

Here are our DIY Halloween Costumes For Adults:

If you are fan of the television show “Scandal” (like WE are!) you’ll get a kick out of this idea! Erik and Kaitlyn as Fitz (President Grant) and Liv (Olivia Pope).

For the Olivia “costume” all you’ll need is some silky pajamas, a soft, flowy sweater top, a big bowl of popcorn, and the signature Olivia Pope glass of red wine (cranberry juice.) Believe it or not, the wineglass is called just that at Crate and Barrel – The Olivia Pope wineglass!

For the Fitz (Mr. President) costume simply don a dark suit with a red, white, and/or blue tie (loosened) and glass of “Scotch” neat (apple cider). Oh, and don’t forget the American flag pin!

It doesn’t get much easier than that. 🙂

If you have time, but little money, this Lego costume will only cost you the price of a can of spray paint (in the color of your choice) and a cardboard mailer tube! Find an old cardboard box and cut out arm holes and a head hole. Cut the mailer tube into 6 sections, and glue pieces of paper to cover the ends, then glue those to the box. Spray paint the whole thing.

If you don’t have much time OR money….this mummy costume made from an old bed sheet is a great option. I simply tore the sheet into 4 to 5 inch wide strips and then rolled them up like bandages. When it was time to “get dressed” all we did was wrap Britta from head to toe. One king-sized bed sheet ended up being exactly the right size for a full adult-sized mummy suit!

And finally, all that is required for this “bag of Jelly Beans” costume is a clear plastic trash bag, a bag of balloons, and enough lung capacity to blow them up! (Oh and a son who is a good sport to wear it! Thank you Sten!) 🙂

Of course Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without cute costumes for the little ones and all of the above costume ideas (except maybe the “Scandal” couple) could easily be made in pint-sized versions as well. 🙂

Here are a few other DIY Halloween Costumes for Little Ones that we like:

Carl Fredricksen from the movie “Up”

 Clark Kent (aka Superman)

Minions

Cat Lady

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

Mario and Luigi

Jelly Fish

Paper Doll

Dirty Laundry

Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”

Nacho Libre

Dwight Schrute from “The Office”

Hopefully something we’ve shared will provide you with the inspiration to make your Halloween costume decisions a little less stressful this year! 🙂
