How To Make A Beautiful Serving Tray From A Thrift Store Lamp

When you’re having a get-together or a party that calls for serving trays or platters, they can feel a little boring. Don’t get me wrong, I love a clean, white serving dish as much as the next person, but I’m all about a little color and pizazz every once in a while! So that’s where today’s post comes in!

I’m going to show you how to take an old, unloved lamp and turn it into a cute and quirky serving tray that will be the star of the snack table at your next party.

DIY Lamp Serving Tray

You’ll need…

First you’ll need to disassemble the lamp. Start be unscrewing the lampshade, then remove the lamp socket using a pair of pliers. Cut the lamp cord below the socket, and pull it away from the base.

Author’s Note: My lamp turned out to be made of several individual pieces stacked on top of each other, so when I was removing the socket and cord, it kind of fell apart. But I just used the epoxy to glue each piece back together as I reassembled them around the center rod. No big deal!

Next, you’ll cut a hole into the center of your metal baking sheet using your drill or dremel tool. The hole should be just a little bigger than the size of the threaded rod in the center of your lamp.

Unscrew the nut from the threaded rod, then slip the baking sheet over it. Place a washer and the nut you removed back onto the rod, adding a bit of epoxy to each as you put them in place. Finish it off by adding a cap nut to the threaded rod with a bit of epoxy.

Now that you have your tray made, it’s time to paint! I used Rust-Oleum American Accents (a great line of spray paints that I’ve praised in the past), in a pretty aqua color called Ocean Mist.

Once it’s dry, use your new tray to serve whatever you want! I opted for cupcakes, because in my opinion, there’s never a wrong time to throw a cupcake party. 🙂 I love the look of it, plus I love how it elevates the cupcakes off the table, leaving more room for plates or napkins. Pretty AND functional, my favorite combination!
