DIY “Polaroid” Picture Banner

I love the look of the classic “polaroid” instant print photos and I love decorating with banners! Happily, I found a really cute project that combines the two! I decided to hang it in my office, but it would also be great for a birthday, bridal or baby shower, graduation, or just about any kind of celebration! Featuring photos is always fun!

Since I didn’t want to shell out $100 for a Polaroid camera, I decided to come up with my own “instant photos” for a fraction of the cost. As you can see, they are a slightly smaller version of the original instant photo, but I actually like that about them. 🙂

I started with the photos. Since I tend to take more photos with Instagram than just about anything else, I ordered some Instagram magnet sheets from Sticky9. Just upload your photos, select which ones you want, and order! The sheets are $14.99 each with free shipping.

You can order one image as a “magnet puzzle” of 9 small squares, or you can order a sheet of 9 individual photos. The photos easily snap apart.

Even if you never make a banner with them….they will still look great on the fridge!

But you’re going to WANT to make a banner….so let’s get started!!

The Instagram photo magnets worked perfectly for this project because they are already square and just the right size, but you can easily do this project without them! All you would need to do is choose the photos you want to use, crop them to a square, resize them to 5 cm by 5 cm (or 1.97 inch x 1.97 inch) and print them out.

For the polaroid frame, I created two downloadable PDF files, a bottom layer and a top layer. CLICK HERE to download.

First, I took the bottom layer printout and glued it to a sheet of chipboard to provide stability. You could skip this step, but the chipboard provided an added sturdiness that made for a very nice finished product. I used spray adhesive to glue the entire page to the chipboard, and then used a paper cutter to cut out the polaroid frame shapes.

Next, I used double sided tape to attach the picture magnets to the polaroid frames.

At this point, you could call it good, or, you can choose to use the provided top layer template as well. I think adding another layer of paper on top of the photos gives it a nice finished look.

If you want to frame your picture with a cute printed paper instead of the classic white, you would just print the top layer template onto the paper of your choice, cut out each frame, and then use an XACTO knife to remove the inner square. Then just tape or glue that over your picture!

The last step is to string your framed pictures together. I found this great hole punch on clearance at Michaels, and used it to make two small holes on each side of the frame.

Then I used a large sewing needle to string several of the frames together with some baker’s twine.

Such a simple idea, but so fun and versatile! Make one for your home or office or make a special occasion one for someone you love! I’m sure any bride-to-be would love something like this! Or string one for Mom or Dad using photos of the family over the years.

I can see the happy tears now! 🙂
