Today we’re talking about one of the current biggest trends in skincare products: sheet masks! Whether they are a regular part of your skincare routine or you’ve only used them for a “treat yo self” spa day at home, sheet masks are quickly becoming a global obsession.
We’ll start by taking a look at some of the benefits and drawbacks of sheet masks, and then I’ll be showing you how you can make a DIY sheet mask at home! We’ll also discuss how to make your own mask serums using natural, skin-nourishing ingredients, all for a fraction of the cost. 🙂
So What’s The Deal With Sheet Masks?
A sheet mask is a thin, face-shaped sheet of material that is typically saturated with some sort of serum or skincare product. Sheet masks can help address all sorts of skin concerns, from dryness to acne.
While facial masks are nothing new, sheet masks do have the added benefit of being a bit less messy than the kind you smear on and let dry. One potential drawback, however, is the added cost—a single-use sheet mask can cost anywhere from $2 to $17!
But if you’re willing to go the DIY route, you can make your own skin-nourishing sheet masks at home for a fraction of the cost of the store-bought ones! Here’s how it’s done.

How To Make A DIY Sheet Mask
Supplies:
- Dry sheet mask*
- Mask serum (see “DIY Mask Serums” below)
- Small bowl
*Note: I bought this pack of 100 dry sheet masks on Amazon for just $10 (or just $0.10 per sheet!)
Directions:
Step 1 – Cleanse & Tone
Start with clean hands and a clean face. Remove your makeup and/or use a cleanser to remove impurities from your skin, then pat your face dry with a clean towel.
Then apply a toner (if you have one) after cleansing to prepare your skin to absorb all the skin-nourishing ingredients of your sheet mask.
Step 2 – Prepare The Sheet Mask
Add the ingredients of your chosen mask serum to a small bowl, then use a fork to whisk them together.
Drop one of your dry sheet masks into the finished mask serum mixture and let it swell for a minute or two. Use your fingers to gently unfold the compressed sheet mask as it swells to make sure the whole thing gets fully saturated.
Step 3 – Apply
Remove the saturated sheet mask from the bowl and squeeze gently to stop it from dripping. Then place the sheet mask on your face, and let it sit for 15-30 minutes.
Step 4 – Remove & Moisturize
Remove the sheet mask, then discard it. If any of the mask mixture remains on your skin, there’s no need to rinse—massage it into your skin for even more moisture!
Finally, apply a bit of your favorite moisturizer if desired. Use sheets masks once a week to begin with so you don’t overwhelm your skin.
