How To Make Homemade Shower Disks To Clear Congestion

I’m a firm believer in the healing power of showers. No matter what the ailment, the steam and warm water always help me feel a bit better. But steam alone can only do so much, especially for respiratory issues.

Last year, I wrote a post about bringing fresh eucalyptus into the shower to help clear out congestion. I still love that idea, because who doesn’t love smelling fresh eucalyptus? (Plus it doesn’t hurt that it looks really pretty.)

Today’s project is a variation on the same idea, with the power turned up. I’m going to show you how to make your own shower disks, which are packed with congestion-clearing essential oils and  menthol. Right now is the perfect time to sit down and make these disks, so you’ll have them at the ready when cold and flu season hits.

Homemade Congestion-Clearing Shower Disks

You’ll need:

Start by using a rolling pin to crush the menthol crystals into until they resemble a powder.

Combine the baking soda, epsom salts, and powdered menthol crystals.

Add a very small amount of water at a time, just until you it will stay clumped together when you pinch it.

Add the essential oils and mix thoroughly.

Pack the mixture into the wells of your silicone mold, and press down hard on each one. You want to compress them as much as possible.

Let the disks dry in the mold overnight (or until they manage to dry out, if you live somewhere humid). Remove the disks from the mold and store them in an airtight container.

How to Use Your Shower Disks

To relieve congestion, bring one of the disks into the shower with you and place it on the floor. The hot water and steam in the shower will diffuse the oils into the air, and you’ll be breathing easier in no time!
