Make This Easy Spray Starch To Look Sharp For Less Money

I have to brag on my husband for a minute today, which is something I don’t do nearly enough here on my blog! He’s a pretty terrific guy, and he puts up with a LOT being married to me! Although we’ve definitely been through our ups and downs over the years, there’s no one else I would want to experience this crazy ride with! Anyway, back to the bragging… one of the many great things about my husband is that he does all his own ironing.

Ever since we first got married, he has ironed all his own clothes. And he does a great job! It took him awhile to get the hang of it when he first started, but now he’s got it down to a science. He even uses spray starch to keep his white dress shirts looking crisp and sharp. As a matter of fact, one Sunday after a church meeting, an elderly woman approached me and said, “I’m so impressed with how nice your husband’s shirts always look!” So naturally, I smiled and responded, “Why thank you!” (See, I told you he puts up with a lot!) 😉

Since I’m always interested in homemade versions of products we normally buy, a couple years ago I decided to look into whether I could make a spray starch that would work as well as my husband’s favorite store-bought brand. What I discovered was that not only is it ridiculously easy to make your own spray starch, but it also works every bit as good as the stuff you can buy! Here’s how it’s done so you can make your own spray starch at home!

Homemade Spray Starch

You’ll need:

2 cups warm water
1 Tbsp cornstarch
1-2 drops essential oil (optional)
Spray bottle

Directions:

Fill your bottle with warm water.

Add one heaping tablespoon of cornstarch. Put a lid on the jar, and shake it until the cornstarch has dissolved completely. The mixture should look a bit like skim milk.

You can also add in a couple drops of essential oil for fragrance if desired. (Lavender oil or lemon oil would be nice!)

How To Use Your Homemade Spray Starch

Before using, give the spray bottle a good shake. Spray the item lightly while ironing for a crisp, neat look. (A little bit of this spray goes a long way, so it’s best to start with a light spritz. Then you can add a bit more if needed, and avoid making your item look TOO starch-y.)

I’ve used this spray starch on everything from cloth napkins to the hubster’s white dress shirts, and I’m always so pleased at how well it works! I kind of hate to think about how much money we’ve spent on store-bought spray starches over the years. But you live and you learn!
