Frequent Headaches? Me Too, And This Is What Helps Most

There's hope for people who suffer from frequent headaches and migraines like I do!

As someone who frequently suffers from headaches and migraines, I know all too well how disruptive they can be! Even a mild headache can make it impossible to perform to the best of your ability, while a severe headache can prevent you from being able to do anything at all!

And while pain relieving medications like ibuprofen can help with headache pain, it doesn’t hurt to have some natural remedies up your sleeve as well. That way you’re not entirely relying on meds to make it through the day, and you’ll be less likely to accidentally overshoot the daily dosage limit.

That’s why in today’s post, we’ll be talking about one specific sort of natural remedy for headaches: using essential oils. By the end of this post, you’ll not only know which essential oils may help ease the pain of headaches and migraines, but you’ll also know several different ways to use them too!

So let’s get started, shall we? First, let’s go over some of the best single essential oils for headaches, and then I’ll tell you about my go-to oil blend afterward.

The Best Headache Essential Oil Blend: Complete Relief

Treating a specific issue like headaches can be easier with the help of a targeted essential oil blend. And in my opinion, there’s no better essential oil blend to help treat headaches than Complete Relief!

Complete Relief is a blend of marjoram, black pepper, basil, spike lavender, and copaiba essential oils. Black pepper, spike lavender, and copaiba oils are often used for pain relief, with copaiba in particular proving effective in decreasing pain scores in this 2018 study.

Marjoram and basil oil are prized for their soothing effects, and basil oil is particularly promising as an intervention for head pain. A 2020 study concluded that regular application of basil oil can help reduce both the intensity and frequency of migraine headaches.

The combination of these powerful pain relieving and soothing oils in a blend makes Complete Relief a natural remedy worth having on hand especially if you deal with frequent headaches or migraines! (And it certainly doesn’t hurt that this blend smells really nice either—I’ve been known to diffuse it even when I’m not trying to shake a headache!)

Best Essential Oils For Headaches And Migraines

If you don’t happen to have Complete Relief blend on hand but you do have individual essential oils, the following can help provide relief:

1. Peppermint Oil

People have used peppermint oil as a remedy for many ailments for thousands of years, and it’s one of the most popular essential oils for soothing headaches and migraines. A 2015 review of essential oil studies found that applying peppermint oil topically to the temples and forehead can provide relief from tension headaches.

2. Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is known for its ability to anti-inflammatory effects, and particularly how it affects sinus inflammation. Sinus pressure can often result in headaches, so those with sinus-related head pain and pressure may get some relief from inhaling eucalyptus oil. A 2008 study found that cineole (a terpene found in eucalyptus) helped improve headache pain in patients with sinusitis.

3. Lavender Oil

The relaxing effect of lavender essential oil is known to help reduce stress, and as headaches and migraines are often side effects of stress, it isn’t hard to believe that lavender oil could help relieve stress-related headaches and migraines. A 2012 study provides some support for that theory, which found that people who inhaled lavender essential oil experienced a significant reduction in headache pain in a placebo-controlled clinical trial.

4. Geranium Oil

While geranium oil is most well known for its skin-soothing properties, some research has shown that it may also be useful in hormonal and menopausal applications. Geranium oil may help provide relief from PMS-related headaches, according to this 2018 study of the effects of aromatherapy massage on PMS symptoms.

5. Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil has traditionally been used to support healthy circulation, regulate blood pressure, and relieve pain from tension headaches. This mechanism of action may be related to rosemary oil’s anti-inflammatory properties, since inflammation of the blood vessels around the brain is often part of the development of tension headache pain.

6. Chamomile Oil

Much like a soothing cup of chamomile tea can help you relax, chamomile oil (also known as matricaria chammomila oil) is thought to perform in a similar way. A 2012 study found that chamomile essential oil could improve some of the symptoms of anxiety and depression, meaning it could be a useful way of treating headaches that are side effects of stress and mental health issues.

Wondering exactly how to use essential oils for headaches or migraines? Here are four easy options:

4 Ways To Use Essential Oils To Relieve A Headache

1. Apply Them Topically

Applying essential oils topically is a straightforward option for soothing a headache, but you need to make sure to dilute them with a carrier oil first. To do this, just add a couple of drops of your oil or oil blend of choice to a teaspoon or so of fractionated coconut oil or another carrier oil.

Once diluted, you can dab the oil mixture onto your temples, forehead, or the back of your neck when you feel a headache coming on. (You can also save yourself a step by using the Complete Relief Ready-To-Apply Roll-On, which comes pre-diluted so you can swipe it on right out of the bottle!)

2. Diffuse Them

Using essential oils in a diffuser is another great way to relieve headaches. Simply add a few drops of your chosen essential oil or oil blend to the water in your diffuser and turn it on!

3. Make A Compress

Combine essential oils with a hot or cold compress for double the headache relief! Just add a couple of drops of your chosen oil to a cotton ball, lay it against a hot or cold compress, and secure it in place by wrapping a towel around it.

Lie down for a while with the compress pressed against the affected area, and you’ll be back on your feet in no time.

4. Add Them To A Bath

Another option for doing double duty against headache pain is to combine essential oils and a soothing soak in the tub. Mix a few drops of your oil of choice with a cup of Epsom salt and add it to a warm bath. Then soak in the tub for at least 15 minutes to relieve tension and feel your headache melt away.
