11 Smart And Cheap Ways To Make Your Home Safer

1. Install A DIY Home Security System

Sometimes a crook is just an opportunist who took advantage of an unlocked door. Don’t make it easy for someone to break in! If you’re not in the habit of using your exterior locks, make it a point to lock the door each time you leave the house – even if you’re just running a quick errand.

In addition to using your locks, you can also consider upgrading to stronger, more secure locks. Even adding a simple chain or bolt can beef up your door!

7. Get Solid Exterior Doors

The strongest doors are made from solid wood, or consist of a steel shell that’s wrapped with wood. Even the best locks won’t do much good against an intruder if the door itself isn’t strong too!

8. Don’t Forget Windows

Install window stops that prevent your windows from being opened more than 6 inches. You can still use them for ventilation, but they won’t open wide enough to let an intruder slip through. (A window stop can be as simple as a thick wooden dowel placed along the window track!)

9. Motion Lights

Exterior motion lights make it hard for a crook to sneak around your home without being seen. Plus, the lights suddenly turning on may be enough to scare a potential crook away! Solar-powered motion lights are a great choice if you’d rather not upgrade your wired lights.

10. Don’t Broadcast Your Plans

As tempting as it can be to post on Facebook about your upcoming trip, it’s better to keep your plans to yourself. Letting your neighbors, acquaintances, and even perfect strangers know that your house will be empty in the coming weeks is just asking for trouble. Keep your plans quiet until you’ve returned from your trip.

11. Get To Know The Neighbors

It’s always a good idea to get to know your neighbors, especially when it comes to home security. A friendly neighbor may be willing to keep an eye on your place while you’re away! And even when you’re not away, you could form or join a neighborhood watch group with your neighbors to exchange information about break-ins or suspicious activity.
