This post is sponsored by GetSafe. As always, all opinions and ideas are entirely my own.
Over the past few years, I’ve had plenty of experience with cyber security issues. I’ve had run-ins with hackers, cyber bullies, identity thieves… you name it! But even though I’ve had my share of cyber security issues, I’ve been relatively blessed when it comes to home security. We live in a smaller town that I consider to be quite safe, and we haven’t had any issues with break-ins or theft since I’ve lived here. (I am frantically knocking on wood as I type!)

While I haven’t had any home security issues yet, I’m not naive enough to believe that it could never happen to me. I’ve been interested in getting more serious about home security, but I’ve been reluctant to invest in an expensive and complicated system. I was recently approached by GetSafe about potentially collaborating on a blog post about home security, and it seemed like the sign I had been waiting for! I eagerly accepted, and today I’ll be sharing some easy ways to beef up your home security.
So without any further ado, here are a few budget-friendly and DIY ways to keep your home safe and sound! (And be sure to check out the special offer from GetSafe near the bottom of the post, just for OGT readers!)
11 Easy And Inexpensive Home Security Tips

1. Install A DIY Home Security System
Installing a DIY home security system like GetSafe can be a great way to increase your home security without blowing your budget. GetSafe offers many of the same components that traditional systems have, like motion sensors, window sensors, cameras, etc.

Once you finish the simple installation process, you’ll be able to monitor and control the components through an app on your smartphone. Peace of mind has never been so easy, or affordable!

There are other benefits to a DIY system like GetSafe too. The system is completely wireless, meaning you can install, remove, upgrade, or move your system at any time. It’s a great option for renters who can’t make major installations or alterations to their apartments. And you don’t have to commit to an expensive long-term contract either!

2. Empty Your Mailbox
A mailbox that’s overflowing with junk mail can be a sign that you’re out of town. Ask a friend or neighbor to bring your mail in while you’re away, and to keep your porch clear of fliers and door hangers.

3. Take Garbage Out
If you have a weekly garbage collection day, ask a friend or neighbor to take your garbage cans down to the street on trash day while you’re away. Even if the cans are empty, it will be harder for thieves to tell that you’re not home if your garbage cans are still being put out.

4. Decoy Decal
Many would-be burglars are deterred by the presence of a security system sign or sticker. If you can find a spare sticker or sign, you might consider displaying it even if you don’t actually have that security system.

5. Consider Cover
Overgrown bushes, vines, and trees can provide burglars with cover or an easy place to hide. Trim and cut back any bushes, trees, or other foliage around entry points (like your doors, windows, and garage).

6. Upgrade & Use Your Locks
Sometimes a crook is just an opportunist who took advantage of an unlocked door. Don’t make it easy for someone to break in! If you’re not in the habit of using your exterior locks, make it a point to lock the door each time you leave the house – even if you’re just running a quick errand.
In addition to using your locks, you can also consider upgrading to stronger, more secure locks. Even adding a simple chain or bolt can beef up your door!

7. Get Solid Exterior Doors
The strongest doors are made from solid wood, or consist of a steel shell that’s wrapped with wood. Even the best locks won’t do much good against an intruder if the door itself isn’t strong too!

8. Don’t Forget Windows
Install window stops that prevent your windows from being opened more than 6 inches. You can still use them for ventilation, but they won’t open wide enough to let an intruder slip through. (A window stop can be as simple as a thick wooden dowel placed along the window track!)

9. Motion Lights
Exterior motion lights make it hard for a crook to sneak around your home without being seen. Plus, the lights suddenly turning on may be enough to scare a potential crook away! Solar-powered motion lights are a great choice if you’d rather not upgrade your wired lights.
10. Don’t Broadcast Your Plans
As tempting as it can be to post on Facebook about your upcoming trip, it’s better to keep your plans to yourself. Letting your neighbors, acquaintances, and even perfect strangers know that your house will be empty in the coming weeks is just asking for trouble. Keep your plans quiet until you’ve returned from your trip.
11. Get To Know The Neighbors
It’s always a good idea to get to know your neighbors, especially when it comes to home security. A friendly neighbor may be willing to keep an eye on your place while you’re away! And even when you’re not away, you could form or join a neighborhood watch group with your neighbors to exchange information about break-ins or suspicious activity.
