How To Give A Room A Color Makeover

Last spring we had a little flood in the basement. :-/  Actually, it wasn’t the first time…I think it was the THIRD. Unfortunately, the plumbing in this house is particularly finicky, and when it gets “in a mood,” it will retaliate by backing up in the kitchen-dining area of the apartment downstairs…where my oldest son, Erik, and his wife, Kaitlyn, live.

Well, after the third time (three strikes and you’re OUT…and all that!) we finally bit the bullet and decided to rip up the abused carpeting and put in tile. Like I said, that was about a YEAR AGO, and the poor room has seen little love and attention since then. The tile got put in, but the baseboards never were replaced and walls that badly needed re-painting sat there looking woeful.

Enter Sherwin-Williams!! With the help of their ColorSnap® mobile app, Kaitlyn and Erik were able to give the room a whole new look on a very modest budget!

HO-HUM!

YAWN!

 ZZZZZZZ…….

You can see from the “BEFORE” pictures that the space doesn’t look bad to begin with…but it is pretty much crying out for some COLOR, don’t you think? I’ll let Kaitlyn tell you about her experience with the Color Visualizer!

I was so excited when Jill told me that we were going to be able to give our kitchen a much needed boost with the help of Sherwin-Williams. As you can see in the pictures, I tried giving the room a little added life with a bright red rug and our yellow table – but it just wasn’t enough. The kitchen was just sooooo white. White walls, white cabinets, white appliances, white curtains…just white, white, white. So bor-ing! This room was screaming for some color!

I knew that I wanted the walls to be yellow – the kitchen doesn’t get much natural light, and I knew yellow would brighten it up without being too overwhelming. But do you know how many shades of yellow there are?? Sherwin-Williams has 153 to be exact.

Luckily Sherwin-Williams has some great tools for helping you find the perfect paint color. I decided to use the handy dandy ColorSnap mobile app. After downloading the app to my phone, I used it to take a picture of some yellow silk hydrangeas that I have in my living room. The flowers are this perfect buttery shade of yellow that I thought would be a great color in the kitchen. After taking the picture, the app brings up a tool that highlights a small portion of the picture and allows you to scroll around until you find the color you like. Once you find the right shade, the app tells you which Sherwin-Williams paint color most closely matches. The shade I picked out was “Optimistic Yellow.”

Next, my husband and I headed to the Sherwin-Williams store. We worked with a great associate and told him that we had used the app to pick a color we liked. He ended up helping us pick another color that was very similar, but that he thought would work even better with the tile color in our kitchen. We ended up with “Friendly Yellow”, and I just love it! We decided to use the Emerald™ Interior Acrylic Latex Paint because it’s a high quality paint and easy to clean.

Thanks Kaitlyn!

Then the fun really began! After painting and a few special surprise touches…the room has a whole new lease on life! I can’t wait to show you! But you’re going to have to wait a few days to see the final reveal!  I know, I’m such a tease. 🙂

It will be worth it though…I promise!
