Growing up in southern California, the “beach waves” hairstyle was not something you found in a bottle, but something you got by actually going to the beach. 🙂 What we thought was just “beach hair” (that we couldn’t wait to get home to wash) is now actually a fashion statement! Nowadays lots of people pay good money for products designed to give hair that “been at the beach all day” look.
Olivine Atelier makes a popular product called Love & Salt Beach Hair. But get this – an 8oz bottle will set you back nearly $30! Even if I’m MILES and MILES away from a “real” beach, I can’t justify spending that much for a “beach-y look”. But recently, out of curiosity and my inability to leave well enough alone, I decided to look up how to make your own “beach waves spray.” 😉 I came across the perfect formula and was amazed at how SIMPLE it actually is! And best of all, this version only costs a few dollars to make. 🙂
Homemade Beach Waves Spray
Ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 Tbsp gel
- 2 tsp oil
- Essential oils for fragrance (optional)
Note: The quality of ingredients you use is totally up to you! We used ancient sea mineral salt, aloe vera gel, and fractionated coconut oil in our formula, but you could easily use table salt, hair gel, and olive oil for a super-affordable spray that will give you similar results!
Directions:
Add all ingredients to a measuring cup and stir to combine.
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
Spray all over damp hair and scrunch with your fingers. Blow dry or let it air dry. Finger comb through your hair and you look like you just came from a beautiful and fun day at the beach!
If you want more dramatic and longer lasting results, let the spray work its magic overnight. Just apply the spray all over your hair, then loosely french-braid your hair. In the morning, loosen the braids with your fingers and apply hairspray to help keep it in place.
My daughter Britta kindly offered to be our model for a “before-and-after.” On the left is her hair without any product in it, and the photo on the right shows her hair after applying the spray and wearing her hair in braids overnight. Britta told us that thanks to our homemade beach waves spray, her stubbornly thick-and-straight hair stayed wavy all day!
