Forgive me if I’m a little emotional over today’s post. You see, my daughter Britta actually took an interest in doing something that involved SEWING and I’m feeling a bit nostalgic over the whole thing. My Mom taught ME to sew many, many moons ago…and it’s honestly something I NEVER would have imagined that I would be teaching my daughter to do. It just goes to show….never say never! 🙂

Recently, I came across a sewing project in the Spring 2014 issue of GreenCraft magazine that I fell in love with instantly. It quickly became known as “Scarf Shirt”, because that’s exactly what this project is: a scarf sewn to a shirt. So simple, with such a great effect! How hard could that be, I wondered? But there was one small snag in my plan: I had never actually done a sewing project before! However, I really loved Scarf Shirt, so I was determined to make it work.
Alright, I admit it… while I handled most of this project myself, my mom ended up doing about 90% of the actual sewing. But she says it was really easy, so we’ll all just have to take her word for it! 😉
Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
- A chambray shirt (preferable without breast pockets)
- A printed scarf
- Some sewing pins
- Scissors
- A sewing machine
The only chambray shirts I could find for this project had breast pockets, so I had to go through the lengthy and irritating process of using a seam-ripper to remove them. If possible, make it easier on yourself and use one that is pocket-free!
I WAS however able to find this beautiful, bold scarf that I loved! So that’s a bonus.
First, line your scarf up along the buttonholes of your shirt, leaving about a centimeter of space between. You’ll want the top of the scarf to sit just above the “armpit” of the shirt.
Once you’ve got the scarf lined up the way you want, use your sewing pins to pin it to the shirt.
Once it’s pinned down, use your scissors to trim off the excess material, along the bottom of the shirt and up the seam along the side.
Now comes the sewing part (or the call-your-mom part). Simply sew the section of the scarf along the edges, all the way around. Once you’ve done that, repeat all the steps just listed on the other side of the shirt.
Ta-da! That wasn’t too bad right? And I can’t get over how great the final product looks. This simple project transforms a standard chambray shirt into something totally unique and stylish! Of course, you can feel free to use a scarf with a less bold pattern if you’d like. 😉
This project has got me thinking that there must be a ton of great ideas out there for easy ways to personalize your wardrobe! I guess it’s probably time to sit down and master the sewing machine!
