How To Make An Erasable Message Board That’s Pretty AND Functional

I’ve always been a note-taker and list-maker. The act of writing something down always helps me remember it better, whether it’s appointments, reminders, or shopping lists. Unfortunately, this memory boost does not seem to occur when it comes to writing things down in my phone. I can set up an event in my phone’s calendar for some appointment, and then totally forget about it a few hours later.

So I recently decided that I needed some sort of message board to put up in our house. It didn’t need to be big, just a place that I could list groceries that needed to be bought, jot down a reminder to pick my son up from school an hour later on Tuesday, and all the other little things I tend to forget. When I came across this idea for a customizable, erasable message board, I was immediately sold! It turned out so much cuter than a plain old whiteboard, and I can definitely see myself using it for a long time to come. Here’s how you can make one for your home!

Customizable Message Board

You’ll need:

  • A picture frame
  • Paint
  • Erasable markers (dry erase or chalk)

Start by taking apart your picture frame and removing the glass.

Take the glass outside, or lay it on a drop cloth, and paint one side of the glass using the paint of your choice. Any paint that can be used on glass will be just fine! Let the paint dry completely before handling.

When the paint is dry, replace the glass so that the non-painted side is facing forward in your frame. Replace the backing.

Use an erasable marker to write on the glass. We used a chalk marker we had lying around, but a dry erase marker would work great too! We decided to make a menu board for the kitchen in our studio, as well as a little decorative frame for a little motivation. 🙂

To clean your message board, a damp paper towel is all you need, or a bit of Windex if you need some extra cleaning power.

My favorite thing about this project is that it is totally customizable. Not only can you use whatever colors or designs you want to decorate the glass, but you can also create virtually any kind of board or message system with your markers.

You could make a weekly family schedule board quite easily! Just make a grid, with enough rows for each member of your family, and enough columns for each day of the week. Then you can jot down each person’s activities and appointments so your family can stay on the same page.

Or you could use it as a place to keep scores for family game nights, or play an ongoing game of Hangman, leave notes for your spouse or kids, post the wi-fi password for guests…the options are virtually endless. 🙂

What would you use your customizable message board for?
