This Crazy Simple Hack Makes Fruit Stains Disappear Like Magic

Brightly colored fruit stains may seem impossible to remove, but it's actually easy once you learn this brilliantly simple trick!

I’ve been sharing laundry tips and tricks on my blog for over 8 years now. And if I’ve learned anything during that time, it’s that there are nearly as many ways to remove stains as there are ways to create them!

While that can be frustrating to me as a homemaker, it’s great news for me as a blogger! 😉 I’m always stumbling across new and useful stain removal tips that I can’t wait to share with my readers!

And that brings us to the laundry tip I’ll be sharing with you in today’s blog post! It was recently brought to my attention in an email from an OGT reader named Mary G., and her email couldn’t have come at a better time!

The Problem: Fruit Stains

Mary G.’s email was so timely because she wrote in to tell me about a method for removing fruit stains from clothing, and I’ve been eating a lot of fresh fruit recently. I’ve been using berries to make homemade ice cream and fresh fruit pies, or else enjoying them with just a splash of cream over the top. (Yum!)

And I’m not normally a messy eater, but berries in particular seem to have a way of making their own messes. So berry-stained clothing has been a common sight around the house lately!

Fruit stains can be tricky to tackle, but the solution that Mary G. shared turned out to be simpler than I could have imagined!

The Solution: Hot Water Treatment

Mary G. is a woman after my own heart, because she didn’t despair after discovering several red stains on her white blouse after a visit to a pick-your-own strawberry farm. Instead, she took action and rescued her blouse with the help of a brilliant stain removal trick!

The key factor in her method is deceptively simple: hot water! Hot water is one of the most versatile cleaning agents you have at your disposal, but it’s so common that it’s easy to overlook and underestimate!

Here’s how you can harness the power of hot water to remove those colorful fruit stains from clothing quickly and effectively.

How To Remove Fruit Stains From Clothing

You’ll need:

  • Water kettle
  • Colander or sieve
  • Rubber band

Start by turning the stained item inside-out, then center the stained area over your colander or sieve. Use a rubber band to secure the item in place.

Bring water to a boil in your kettle, then slowly and carefully pour the water over the fruit stain. The stain will disappear before your eyes!

Once the stain is gone, hang the item to dry in the sun if possible. (Sunlight is another powerful stain fighter that often goes overlooked!)

Bonus Tips & Tricks

  • Treat Stains ASAP. The sooner you treat a stain, the better your chances of removing it will be. That is particularly true of brightly-colored fruit stains, so use this trick as soon as you can after the stain occurs!
  • Pour From Above. For the best results, pour the water over the stained item from as high as you can manage without making a huge mess. The added force of the water hitting the fabric may help remove more of the stain.
  • Stick To Fruit Stains. This method works great on stains made by berries, fruit juice, jams and jellies, ketchup, etc. But it’s important to know that hot water can actually set other types of stains, especially protein-based stains. So when it comes to this particular method, stick to using it on fruit stains!
