How To Make And Use A Mason Jar Marinade

All the flavor with less mess and less waste!

Marinating meat before cooking is a simple way to infuse tons of delicious flavor. I usually make my marinades in a small bowl, and then pour the prepared marinade into a ziplock bag along with the meat. But recently I came across an idea that makes this simple process even easier, while also minimizing cleanup and eliminating waste. But what really sealed the deal for me was the fact that this idea uses mason jars! I have a rather extensive collection of them and I’m always glad when I find a new excuse to use them. 😉

This special marinade method couldn’t be easier. Here’s how it works!

Mason Jar Marinade

You’ll need:


1. Start by placing the marinade ingredients into the mason jar.

2. Use your immersion blender to blend ingredients until smooth.

3. Add the meat to the jar, replace the lid, and then refrigerate.

That’s it! You won’t have to clean another bowl, and you won’t have a ziplock bag to throw away when you’re done. You can even put the whole thing in the freezer for a meal later in the week! (If you do freeze it, be sure to move the jar to the fridge the day before you want to make it, so it has time to thaw.)

As far as jar sizes go, we found that a pint-size mason jar was perfect for marinating a single chicken breast using half of a prepared marinade. This is a great way to go if you’re cooking for one! A larger jar, such as a pint-and-a-half or a quart jar, would be a better choice for preparing a family-size portion.

We tried out the mason jar marinade method using chicken breasts and a delicious cilantro and citrus marinade. After letting the chicken marinade in the jar for 30 minutes, we grilled it up on the stovetop, and had a delicious lunch!

Cilantro Citrus Marinade


  • Juice of one small lime
  • Juice of half an orange
  • Handful of cilantro
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 an onion
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/3 cup olive oil


Place all ingredients in a wide-mouth mason jar. Use an immersion blender to blend the mixture until smooth.
