Quick! What’s your favorite condiment!?!? For me it would have to be MUSTARD…followed VERY closely by a Utah tradition…..Fry Sauce. Here in Utah, when it comes to sauce….it’s all about the Fry Sauce! But in Mississippi…..apparently Comeback Sauce is the queen mother of condiments! It’s supposedly a lot like the Bloomin’ Onion sauce at Outback and goes with EVERYTHING….except Cheerios. 🙂
It can be used on burgers, as a sandwich spread, smeared on saltines, as a salad dressing (think Thousand Island with a kick!), as a dip for raw veggies, or shrimp, or onion rings, or french fries, well, you get the picture. Most of the recipes I read for Comeback Sauce agree on the proportions of mayonnaise to ketchup to chili sauce, but after that it’s pretty much up to personal preference. Personally, they had me at “1 cup mayonnaise”.
So without further ado….I bring you…
Mississippi Comeback Sauce
adapted from “Syrup and Biscuits”
Makes a pint jar full.
- 1 cup homemade mayonnaise or store-bought
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup chili sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- juice of one lemon
Mix all ingredients well and store in refrigerator overnight. It needs to sit to let the flavors become “acquainted”.
