The One Easy DIY Everyone Should Keep In Their Bathroom

Stop unpleasant bathroom odors in their tracks with this quick and easy DIY.

A few years back, I received an email from a reader asking if I knew how to make a homemade version of the popular “Poo-Pourri” bathroom spray. In case you’ve never of Poo-Pourri before, it’s a spray containing a proprietary blend of essential oils that can help eliminate unpleasant bathroom odors.

This spray is somewhat unique, because unlike air fresheners and other deodorizing sprays, you spray it directly into your toilet. This creates a thin film of oil on top of the water, which acts as a vapor barrier to effectively trap odors. Pretty neat, right?

I was sure I could create a homemade version that worked just as well as the name brand variety, so I did just that!

To put my formula to the test, I gave a bottle of it to a friend who put it in the men’s bathroom at his office. A couple weeks later, he reported back that the men in his office all said they wanted their own to use at home (which is about the highest praise I could have hoped for!) 🙂

Not only is this spray effective at controlling unpleasant bathroom odors, but it couldn’t be easier to make! Here’s how you can whip up your very own “No. 2” toilet odor spray at home.

How To Make A DIY “No. 2” Toilet Odor Spray

You’ll need:

50 drops Simple Clean Essential Oil Blend*
~4 ounces witch hazel
Small glass spray bottle

*Note: My original formula featured lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot essential oils, but I recently started using Simple Clean instead. If you don’t have it on hand or it isn’t available, you can use 25 drops of lemon oil and 25 drops of eucalyptus oil instead.

Directions:

Remove the spray top from the bottle and add the essential oils, with the help of a small funnel if necessary.

Fill the rest of the bottle with witch hazel, then replace the spray top and shake to combine.

I turned the label pictured here into a downloadable PDF file so that you can use it too! To download the label, just click the button in the box below.

How To Use Your No. 2 Toilet Odor Spray

Shake the bottle well before each use. Spray 3-4 times directly into the toilet bowl before you “go,” and the oils will create a vapor barrier to trap offensive odors. (It doesn’t get much easier than that!)
