One Brownie Recipe, 13 Delicious Variations!

Most of us probably already have a good brownie recipe in our cooking repertoire. (If not, check out our favorite one below.) This timeless classic is definitely a crowd-pleaser especially when you take into account all the different variations available to please almost every palate. The combinations of chocolate and other flavors is virtually endless….but today we’re sharing a few of our favorites.

Buttermilk Brownies

adapted from All You Magazine

Ingredients

  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 6 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup flour (or gluten-free baking mix)

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with foil or parchment, or use cooking spray.

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, remove from heat and add the bittersweet chocolate. Stir together until completely melted.

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the brown sugar, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.

Add in the melted chocolate and the buttermilk, and stir again.

Finally, add the flour and stir just until combined. Pour the batter into your prepared pan, and bake in the oven for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Enjoy!

Brownie Variations

These tasty variations don’t require very many alterations to the original recipe, but they will require a bit more time in the oven – give the brownies below about 55-60 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

Caramel Swirl Brownies

One prepared recipe of Buttermilk Brownies, with a swirl of sweet, gooey caramel throughout.

Caramel Swirl recipe:

  • 12 unwrapped caramels
  • 3 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • 1 egg yolk

In a small saucepan, combine caramels, cream cheese, sugar, and milk. Cook and stir over medium-low heat just until caramels melt. In a small bowl, beat the egg yolk, then gradually stir it into the caramel mixture. Pour the completed caramel mixture over your prepared brownie batter in the baking pan, then use a knife or spoon to swirl the mixes together, and bake.

Pumpkin Swirl Brownies

One prepared recipe of Buttermilk Brownies, with a spiced pumpkin swirl mixed in. Who needs to decide between perfect brownies and the great Pumpkin Pie when you can have both?? 🙂

Pumkpin Swirl recipe:

  • 3 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Beat the ingredients together in a small bowl using a hand mixer, until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Pour the brownie batter into a greased 8-inch baking pan, then pour the pumpkin mixture over the top. Use a spoon or a knife to swirl the pumpkin into the brownie batter, then bake.

S’mores Brownies

Pour half of the prepared Buttermilk Brownie batter into an 8-inch square baking pan. On top of the batter, place a layer of graham crackers, a layer of chocolate bars, and a layer of marshmallows (Jet-Puffed Stacker Mallows work best!) Pour the rest of the brownie batter over the top, and bake.

Peanut Butter and Pretzels Brownies

Substitute a 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter for the buttermilk in the Buttermilk Brownies recipe, and stir in 1/2 cup of Reese’s Pieces candies in when you add the flour. Sprinkle a handful of crushed pretzels over the top of the batter before baking.

Espresso Brownies

Stir in 2 Tbsp instant espresso powder into the Buttermilk Brownie mixture when you add the flour.

Malted Toffee Brownies

Stir in 1 cup of toffee bits and 1/4 cup of malted milk powder when you add the flour to the Buttermilk Brownies. Sprinkle additional toffee bits over the top of the batter before baking.

Banana Nut Brownies

Stir in a cup of mashed bananas and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts into the Buttermilk Brownies batter before baking.

Black Forest Brownies

Make Buttermilk Brownies, folding in 1/2 cup each sour cherry preserves and chopped maraschino cherries.

Minty Brownies

Make Buttermilk Brownies, fold 1 cup mint chips into the batter. Dust with confectioners’ sugar before serving.

Raspberry Brownies

Make Buttermilk Brownies, adding 2 tablespoons raspberry liqueur with the vanilla. Top evenly with raspberries before baking.

Coconut Brownies

Make Buttermilk Brownies, folding in 1 cup each toasted coconut and sliced almonds.

Toffee Brownies

Frozen Brownie Mud Pie
