Simple Ideas to Liven Up Your Summer Wardrobe On A Budget

Try out the latest fashion trends without spending a fortune!

This post is sponsored by thredUP. As usual, all opinions and ideas expressed here are entirely my own.    Let me start out by saying that I do NOT consider myself to be a “fashion expert” by any stretch of the imagination. I like fashion, I’ve always enjoyed keeping up with the latest trends and styles, even if I don’t always try to participate in them. As winter finally began to transition into warmer spring temperatures this year, I thought I would do a little fashion research and see what the real fashion experts were saying about what was going to be “in” this summer. It didn’t take long to find several very popular trends that seemed kind of fun and that I could embrace on a practical level. 🙂

While I wasn’t looking to buy a whole new summer wardrobe, I definitely felt like I could use few new things to replace some of the older stuff that I had either worn out or I never really seemed to wear anymore. Armed with the “trends” I found most intriguing, I turned to thredUP, one of my new favorite online shopping sites, to see what I could find. thredUP is unique in that they sell secondhand clothing in like-new condition, so you can find brand-name clothes for a fraction of the original retail price. It’s the perfect place to shop for new experimental pieces on a budget. And as usual, thredUP did not disappoint!

With health and fitness becoming increasingly important to almost everyone, this trend is becoming more and more popular! The idea behind “athleisure” is that athletic clothes are making their way out of the gym and becoming a part of people’s everyday wardrobes. An idea I wholeheartedly endorse! 🙂 Anything to put more comfort in my wardrobe is OK by me!

This cool black track jacket from Express had a retail price of $80, but I bought it for just $18.99 on thredUP. That’s a savings of nearly 75%!  The fun metallic sneakers are from Torrid and I bought them for $20.99, originally $60!

This outfit also features another big trend in fashion – graphic tees. This one from Zoe Karssen originally cost $60, but I bought it for $22.99 and I am tempted to wear it every single day! I love it that much! 🙂 You can pair a graphic tee with jeans and sneakers for a casual look, or even dress one up by wearing it with a suit, skirt, or even a dress. It’s a fun trend that is most likely going to stick around for awhile!

Head-To-Toe Florals / Mix & Match

Apparently the catwalks were serving up an eye-popping bouquet of florals this spring, which is another trend I can totally get behind. I love flowers! And I’ll take any excuse to be able to wear more of them. You can make this trend even more fun by getting creative with mixing and matching (another trend on its own!) Just make sure there’s one color, like black or navy, that links both prints together. If you’re a little leery of embracing blooms from head to toe, a flowered handbag & shoes, or even jewelry & watches can be easy ways to get in on this fun trend.

Since summer is all about easy, breezy… this floral skirt by Tommy Hilfiger caught my eye! Normally I would pair it with a solid colored cardigan sweater set  (I DO love my cardigans!) but I really wanted to break out of my fashion rut. I found a complimentary floral print blouse by Passport and surprised even myself by how much I liked the combination! I think the fact that the two pieces share colors and the prints are different in size just works! The retail price for the outfit (the blouse and skirt together) would have been $123, but thanks to thredUP I only paid $44.98 – a savings of 64%. Score! I decided to pair the outfit with a brightly-colored bag… another big trend! (See below.)

Bohemian Modernized

Thanks to the rise in popular music festivals like Coachella, the boho fashion trend is becoming more and more popular! Who can resist injecting a little “hippie chic” into their wardrobe!? It’s whimsical, fun, and not to mention comfy! Think of bold prints, paisley patterns, embroidered shoes, breezy blouses, bell sleeves, floppy hats, flowing maxis, fringed vests, eyelet dresses, fringes, suede, embroidered denim, etc.

I decided to aim for a more understated version of the boho look, and found this cute dress by She’s Cool that I styled as a skirt instead. It was originally $60, but I snagged it on thredUP for $25.99. I paired my “skirt” with a comfy-cozy wrap top by Soft Surroundings (originally $95, bought for $46.99) that invokes that “crochet” look that any hippie would be happy to sport. (And it happens to be another sub-trend itself!). 🙂  Gladiator sandals and a bright blue tote complete “the look.” My 70’s self would be proud! 😉

Ruffles & Frills

Ruffles and frills might invoke memories of childhood birthday parties, but the last few years they have made a fashion comeback. Another trend I wholeheartedly endorse. 🙂 The key for someone like me who isn’t looking to make a huge ruffle “statement” is moderation. A yoke blouse or ruffle trim shirt teamed with a pair of jeans or slacks, or a frilled shirt paired with a pencil skirt are nice “grown-up” looks.

Pairing this ruffled v-neck sweater by guinevere (orginally $74, bought for $23.99) with a pair of floral pants that I already owned was an easy way to embrace two fashion trends in one. Paired with bright accessories we have a trendy hit! 🙂

Colored Shoes & Bags

Speaking of bright accessories……this season it’s the brighter, the better! The easiest (and most affordable) way to experiment with a trend is through accessories. From shoes to bags to jewelry, you can find almost anything in highly saturated colors with loads of embellishments. Keep an eye out for exotic beading, tassels, fringe, pompoms and more!

This bag by Fossil has the bright colors, the embellishments, and bold stripes all in one! And best of all I got it for $44.99, marked down from the original retail price of $148 – that’s 70% off! (It sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime sort of deal, but that’s how it is shopping on thredUP! You can snag a like-new Fossil handbag for 70% off like it’s no big deal.) I love the bag paired with these other pretty finds from thredUP – a pair of floral pants by Marie Lund Copenhagen (originally $48, bought for $18.99), and a pink shrug by Talbots (originally $78, bought for $32.99).

In case you’re curious, here are a few of the trends I discovered in my fashion research that I decided to pass on – 80’s disco, palazzo pants and bell sleeves, peek-a-boo cutouts, military fashion, sleepwear as outerwear, and prairie chic. I’ll leave those to you to do with as you will. 🙂

thredUP is offering a special discount to OGT readers! The first 100 people to use the code JILLEE40 at checkout will receive an extra 40% discount on their first order! (Applies to new U.S. customers only. Discount up to $50.)
