Simple Swaps for a Healthier Diet

I don’t know about you, but I’m having a hard time shaking the “anything goes” holiday eating mentality this year! I don’t usually worry about my diet in November and December, then get back on track in January, but so far I’m struggling! So to at least get myself headed in the right direction I decided I need to start small.

When it comes to changing/improving your diet, small improvements are the way to go! Taking drastic measures to be healthier is hard, and the transformations rarely last. Making a few small, but permanent changes can make a big difference!

Here are 15 healthy swaps that you’ll hardly notice:

Replace your favorite cracker with an apple slice! Bonus – apples and cheddar cheese are delicious together!

Instead of putting croutons on your salad, use nuts! You’ll get all the crunch but in a healthier form without any added salt.

Instead of creamy salad dressing, use olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Using a pan with a good, nonstick coating will save you a lot of calories, because you don’t need to add any oil or butter!

Instead of a creamy dip or a cheese dip, reach for the salsa! Better yet, make your own superfoods salsa!

Craving fruit juice? Eat a piece of fruit instead to avoid all the added sugar.

Instead of using a salt shaker, use a small dish or a salt cellar. People tend to use a lot less salt when they see exactly how much they’re using.

Put your giant dinner plates in the back of the cupboard – smaller plates are plenty big and will make you feel like you’re really loading up!

Instead of sour cream, use plain greek yogurt. I love greek yogurt, and prefer a bit of tang in my creamy topping. 🙂 You can also make your own greek yogurt with this foolproof method!

If you can see your leftovers, you’re more likely to eat them! Wrap up the leftovers of your healthy dinner in clear plastic or a clear tupperware – not tin foil. The same goes for what’s on the counter, so keep your fruit bowl out and put the snacks in the cupboard. According to a study from Cornell University, people with cereal on the counter weigh an average of 20 pounds more than their neighbors who kept it out of sight.

Craving noodles for dinner? Try zoodles, or zucchini noodles instead! You can also try spiralizing other veggies, or you can replace noodles with a spaghetti squash.

This frozen treat is made from frozen bananas! It’s a much healthier dessert than ice cream, and it tastes so similar.

If you prefer popsicles, try frozen grapes! You will love them!

Instead of rice, make rice out of cauliflower – it’s healthier and tastes better!

You can also use cauliflower to make mashed “potatoes” and pizza crust!
